You may thing that an office is a relatively safe place to work – and it is in comparison to some jobs, but something that is important to protect against in the office is fire. There are many opportunities for a fire to start – here are some of the most flammable office materials…

Paper – An obvious one, most offices contain paper in abundance, and it is certainly something to be aware of as it poses a fire hazard, particularly when stored in large amounts such as in archives. Correctly storing paper is the key to reducing the risk and remember to clear out old records when no longer in use.

Electrical Equipment – Something that can be found in all offices – equipment from computers to shredders, all which must be regularly tested for safety. However, another risk of electrical fire in an office is if a liquid is spilled onto an electrical item so take care to keep liquids away from anything electrical.

Soft Furniture – Any furniture with fabric on it also poses a fire risk – make sure that all soft furnishings in the office meet the required fire safety standards, and if in doubt get rid of them.
