Assessing Whether a Part Is Worth Repairing

Measuring the dimensional loss on your part and cross checking with repair specifications will indicate if your part can be repaired. If the part has suffered from surface corrosion check for cracks, corrosion pitting or fatigue. If any of these are present, it would be a waste of time and money to attempt to repair the part.

Matching the Treatment to the Wear Mode

The Repair Sequence in Practice

The coating is removed completely from the part to inspect for any deficiencies or previous damage that may have caused the wear. Upon inspection, the part is dipped in dye penetrant solution to highlight any minute cracks or surface damage. If any damage is detected, then it is broken down and stripped of the previous coating. Any part that has been previously coated will be removed completely using a mechanical stripping process followed by a cleaning of the part to remove any residues left over.

Checking Bond Integrity After Coating

Bend tests or pull-off adhesion tests can then be conducted on the coated part to test the bond of the coating to the substrate. Any signs of blistering, delamination or porosity can then be identified and the coating stripped for reapplication.

Documentation for Return to Service

Although an aerospace surface treatment repair has been conducted, a part cannot be returned to service on an aircraft without adequate documentation. This documentation has to accompany the part, and has to be agreed with the approval authority (e.g. a designated engineering authority or quality manager) prior to release from the repair shop.

By setting out the repair specification in the first place, you can avoid having to strip back a worn aerospace part and then having to get it serviced.
