What is Spina Bifida

Spina Bifida is a condition that affects the spinal cord of a developing baby. It can occur anywhere along the spine and is where the neural tube does not close all the way over and the backbone that encases and protects the spinal cord doesn’t form correctly. As a result of this, the spinal cord can become damaged and the nerves attached to it can also be affected.

The severity of the issues that the individual can experience in relation to physical and intellectual disabilities will depend on the size of the opening of the spine and which part of the spinal cord and the associated nerves are affected. The treatments for spina bifida will depend on the symptoms that the individual experiences and the severity of the difficulties that they face. This could include speech and language therapies as well as physiotherapy.
