Killarney National Park – A Guide for First Time Visitors

If you are thinking of heading to Ireland on holiday, then you must visit Killarney national park. For spectacular views and fantastic walks this is a must. Located in county Kerry, Killarney National park is Irelands oldest National park and is also a UNESCO world heritage site. The park is easy to access from the town of Killarney which sits adjacent to the park and there are many lovely places to stay in the town as the perfect base for your explorations.

This mountain range also includes the highest mountain in Ireland – Carrauntoohill stands at lofty heights over 1000 metres!

At the foot of the mountains are some beautiful woodlands and lakes – Muckross, Upper and Lough Leane are the three most famous of the park’s lakes. You may also stumble across waterfalls as you venture through the woodlands, as well as some of the deer that live in herds in the park.

In fact, a wide variety of wildlife can be found in this park, which is deemed a biosphere reserve since 1981. You may be lucky enough to spot otters, peregrine falcons and red squirrels on your travels.

Whilst you are spending time at the national park, it is also worth visiting Ross Castle, which dates back to the 15^th Century, as well as a walk around Irelands oldest walking trail, the ring of Kerry.
