Shopping in New York
New York is one of the favorite cities for many people to go shopping. In New York it is possible to find everything and all prices.
Is everything so cheap?
The reality is that with the current change from euro to dollar yes it is all cheaper, but not enough to lead to compulsive purchases. That is, speaking of fashion, there are specific products that everyone speaks about and that will cost you less than half of what they are worth in Spain. Some examples are Levis pants and Converse shoes. However, if you expect to enter stores like Hugo Boss and find clothes at bargain prices, you will be disappointed.
A separate subject is electronics, where you can find good bargains; Laptops, digital cameras, iPods and phones are items that almost every visitor to New York has in mind.
Where to go shopping?
If what you want are brand stores, the largest concentration of these is on Fifth Avenue at the height of Central Park. At this point you will also find the Apple store, for many a tourist visit over New York.
If you only look for cheap clothes, some of the most famous shopping centers are Macy’s or KMart. Macy’s is located next to Penn Station and is one of the most recommended and famous places in New York. In addition, showing the ID or passport in customer service will give you a discount card of 11% valid for 30 days, to use in all items except electronics, furniture and the like.
Shopping in Chinatown
For all those who look for cheap things, the best area is Chinatown. In Chinatown you can find counterfeits of almost any watch, purse or wallet in the market.
In Chinatown there are two ways to buy: the first, in the many shops that are in the streets of the neighborhood, and the second, when walking down the street someone whispers “Chanel, Dior …”, if you answer and follow him, you will end up in the basement of some apparently closed shop in which there will be several rooms full of fakes. The possible discount with respect to other stores does not compensate the experience.
People in Chinatown usually negotiate prices based on quantities, it is usual that someone who goes with the idea of buying 5 or 6 watches get a good price. Even if you only want one unit, if you force and you are good, you will not pay more than half of what they initially ask you for.
Outlets in New York
If one of the objectives of the trip is to renew the costumes, the best option is to pay a visit to the outlet stores that are located on the outskirts of the city. The discounts are worth it and many people go to New York exclusively to go shopping at these shopping centers and save some money.
There are several outlets within walking distance of New York, but for price, variety, discounts and atmosphere Wood bury Common Premium Outlets has no competition. It is the most famous discount shopping center in the states of New York and New Jersey.
When you come back from New York you have the impression that everything is negotiable there. Although this may seem evident in the basements of Chinatown, it can also happen in prestigious shops on 5th Avenue. In various jewelers we were offered almost 50% discount when asking about different watches.
