Accessories That Lift an Ascot Outfit

The finishing touches to an Ascot outfit can really make or break the whole look – especially when dressing up for a classy event. The key is to ensure that all of the additional pieces of the outfit are of a high quality and add to the overall style of the wearer.

Hats and Headpieces

The Royal Enclosure stipulates that a hat must have a solid base of at least 10cm in diameter and is not to be worn in conjunction with headbands or hair clips. You should check the official Royal Ascot dress code for the most up-to-date information on the rules for each enclosure. A hat with a mid-sized brim is generally the most practical as it looks structured enough but is not so big that it blows in the wind.

Fascinators

Fascinators are permitted in the Queen Anne Enclosure but not in the Royal Enclosure. For the Queen Anne Enclosure, ensure your fascinator is angled forward over one eye. Also make sure it is not too small – try to make it at least the size of a saucer to avoid it looking like you have added an afterthought to your outfit.

Structured Bags

Small, structured bags such as clutch bags are best to carry around during the day. A clutch bag with a width of approximately 25 to 30cm is ideal as this allows you to pack enough to need during the day without it looking too cumbersome to carry. Choose a bag in the same colour to your shoes and try to keep the number of colours used in your outfit to the minimum (i.e. two).

Shoes and Heels

Stilettos can become stuck in the grass so opt for a block heel or wedge of at least 3cm for all day comfort. The shoe should be of a nude or soft metallic colour to go with your shoes not your dress. If you have chosen a very bold shoe then the rest of your outfit should be pretty low key.

Jewellery

If wearing a hat to Ascot, remember the scale of the hat and earrings. Large brimmed hats are overpowering and can look strange in conjunction with large statement earrings.

Gloves

Elbow-length gloves will complement a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress whilst wrist-length gloves are ideal for three-quarter sleeves. Always take your gloves off before you eat. It looks so much better!

With a little thought to each of the above categories, your outfit will hold together well for the day.
