Preparing the garden for winter
As we move out of September and into October, the Autumn begins proper. Luckily there is still time to get ready for the coming winter months. We should get some sunny and mild days as the garden changes colour to reds, yellows and browns for the season. In the UK, we’ve seen a trend towards milder and wetter winters that usually bring about an early spring. With our climate changing, this is likely to continue. It’s predicted that we will have a Mediterranean climate as opposed to the temperature one we have now. This still means that cold snaps and frost may happen, and you should be prepared for them.
One thing you’ll have to do is generally tidy up before the winter months set in. Plants, shrubs and trees go dormant in the winter and so any cutting should be done now. Lawns, in particular, should be cut right back. There should be no need to cut the lawn again until March; however, given the nature of climate change, maybe this is not the case, and another cut may be needed if the weather remains mild.
All of the weeds, grass cuttings and weeds need to go somewhere, and the local tips compost bins seem the likeliest place. To save on car trips, why not invest in a trailer?
