Mental health support in schools reaches record numbers

Mental health struggles can affect people of any age, and school children are no exception. Whether it’s the pressure of exam season or the well-known negative effects of social media, young people are now experiencing unprecedented levels of mental health difficulties.

Fortunately, it’s become far less taboo to talk about how we feel, whether that’s with family members, friends or professionals. In fact, opening up about our problems and emotions allows our brains to process events, traumas and feelings, paving the way to clarity and improved wellbeing.

Education

Thanks to government investment, nearly 6 million young people can now access support for their mental health via their school or college – a rise of around 800,000 on this time last year.

Indeed, MHSTs or Mental Health Support Teams now have a presence in almost 12,000 schools across England, while the UK government aims to have this support in every school as soon as 2029.

School surveys suggest that the impact of this is huge, with 9 in 10 of the schools surveyed stating that this has benefitted their students’ mental health overall.
