The Skills needed to be a live-in carer.
Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second
Rather than choose to live in sheltered accommodation or in a home, many people who require care opt to have a live-in carer. This means that someone is resident with them and provides complete care, including meals, cleaning and companionship. This is not an easy job, and just like any other employed role, it needs skills and abilities. Here are a few that you will need to have to make a success of it.
- You need to be caring. It might seem obvious, but a dispassionate approach is not going to work here. You have to develop empathy and understanding with the person that you are going to be caring for. It is a deep emotional commitment; it has to be.
- Be respectful. You could come across people from all walks of life. They might be of a different religious belief or a different race. None of this is important to the carer, when it comes to how you treat the person; you must show respect.
- Personable and Friendly. This might be the most essential skill of the lot. You have to have a sunny disposition and make the person you care for laugh. You should swap tales and communicate. It will make the job so much easier. An interest in people, who they are and where they’ve been is essential.
- Reliable. You have to be there for the person that you care for. You can’t be late or fail to come through on a promise. They are relying on you, and you have to be there for them.
