If you’re new to the world of caravanning, you might be a little unsure of how to go about loading one for a safe towing experience. Here are some useful tips:
- Make a list of only the things you need
We all end up packing too much but you can get by with a lot less than you imagine. It won’t take much to push your caravan over the legal load weight so make a list of essentials and stick to it.
- Maintenance checks
Always check the vehicle before heading off. For a range of Trailer Parts, go to Auto and Trailer, providers of Trailer Parts.
- Load heavy items low down
The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable an item is and caravans are no exception. Towing will be much easier and safer when you pack heavier items low down. For example, store tinned foods in the bottom cupboards. Medium items can be stored higher but still below window height and lightweight things can be stored in overhead lockers.
- Above the axles
Load as much weight as possible of the axles of the caravan. The next place to focus on is the front and lastly, the rear. By loading over the axles, you are creating a more even and balanced load that will make towing much safer.
- Even on both sides
How you pack your caravan will depend on the interior layout. If all the appliances are on one side, try to even out the weight by packing more on the opposite side.
- Tie down items
It’s important to secure items before travelling. If you have to make a sudden stop, things can easily fly about and get smashed!
