The term “work-life balance” is used to describe the trade-off. You must balance your time between work and family time, as well as time with friends and personal interests.

This can also be a measure of the flexibility that team members perceive they have. Can you integrate your work and your personal needs? Are you able to respond when the need arises? How much do your work and personal commitments interfere with each other?

For centuries, the challenge of balancing work and life has existed. Reformers of the early 1900s fought for fair labour practices at a period when many people worked over 100 hours per week.

The term “work-life balance” was not coined before the 1980s. It was coined by the women’s liberation movements to describe the difficulties faced by women who had families and worked. Work-life balance is now a concern for both men and women.
