Before the invention of the lawnmower there was only the scythe. The scythe is an agricultural implement that has been used for centuries and it served the farm worker pretty well. However as with everything in life new processes and machinery came and took over the scythe and the scythe operators role. Sad, when you consider that the only reason the lawnmower was developed was to cut the grass of playing pitches.

The idea behind the scythe was to use it in a swishing sideways action that needed to be maintained constantly. Lines of men and women would make their way up and down fields with them. The was very heavy work on the shoulders and arms but at least it kept them fit. In fact some people have taken this fact on board and have decided to buy scythes, still available, instead of mowers in a round of gardening keep fit.
